Hot in Bohemia
It so dreadful hot in the CR, it has never been like that before, literally. It is scary. We managed to do a little trip while our friend came for a visit with her children. And we went to the ossuary in Sedlec. Kids loved it.
It is interesting how we tend to think today what a bizarre stuff these ossuaries were, they are often in village churches, on a semi-ground floor, with bones coming from a surrounding cemetery leaving more space for new graves, but rarely the bones are composed in such ornamental compositions, forming a canopy, columns, monstrance and chandeliers like in Sedlec, in regular ossuaries the bones are piled in neatly shaped formations but that is it. The written guide said that the bone compositions were an expression of a today hardly comprehensible baroque religiosity and had nothing to do with the shocking or strangely appealing image we get today. I am trying to imagine it.
The littlest kid of our company bough a clay reduced model of a skull but lost it soon after. He at least drew it in his little travel book.
